In 1977, the artist On Kawara began a series called I Am Still Alive. It wasn’t a traditional art project. He didn’t paint or sculpt. Instead, he sent telegrams to friends and colleagues with a simple message: “I am still alive.”
The project lasted for years. This mundane exercise, seemingly insignificant in its isolated executions, was a practice that resulted in an evocative body of work that spoke literal volumes over time.
